Inspecting a generator upon delivery is a critical step before putting it into operation. With over 40 years of experience, Huu Toan provides a detailed checklist to help businesses and technicians verify the generator's condition and performance.

1. Initial Inspection

Start by verifying the following basic information on the generator's nameplate: Model name, serial number, size, year of manufacture

  • Rated power (prime) and standby power
  • Type of engine and alternator (these are the two most important components in a generator, requiring careful inspection)
  • Subsequent inspections will cover the control panel, alternator, engine, soundproof housing, and a load test.

2. Control Panel Inspection

  • The control panel consists of the controller, voltage regulator, and wiring.
  • Controller: Thoroughly check the main functions of the controller. Some common types used in Vietnamese generators include DEEPSEA, COMAP, DATAKOM, SICES, and EMKO.
  • Voltage regulator: Inspect the insulation coating and the battery charging function.
  • Wiring: Ensure correct and complete numbering, and that the connectors are securely crimped.

3. Alternator Inspection

The alternator performs three functions: generating electricity, rectifying, and regulating voltage. The two most important components of an alternator are the ROTOR and STATOR. When inspecting the alternator, pay attention to:

  • Appearance: Check the paint, the position of the alternator mounting feet.
  • AVR connection: Ensure the connectors are securely crimped and not broken or loose.
  • TI connection: The connection must be fixed in place, the wires must be securely tied and neat.
  • Drive shaft: Check the crimp points and bolt connections for tightness.

4. Engine Inspection

This is a crucial component, often considered the heart of the generator. It provides the mechanical energy input. Common fuels include gasoline, diesel, and natural gas. Key inspection items include:

  • Appearance: Check for uniform paint coverage, secure engine mounting, and no dents or deformities.
  • Flexible coupling: Ensure the clamp is tight and the connection is not affected by heat from the exhaust pipe.
  • Oil, water, and grease plugs: Check for leaks.
  • Sensor and switch connections: Verify the tightness and identify the correct connectors.

5. Soundproof Enclosure Inspection

  • Inspect the paint for a smooth finish, no peeling or dents.
  • Hinges for the control panel and door must be firm and sturdy.
  • The rain cover should not make any noise when the engine starts.
  • The MCCB position should be securely fixed and have a phase barrier.
  • For areas near the battery, carefully check the battery tray size and securing straps.
  • Soundproof enclosure (if applicable): Check for any damage, rust, or scratches.

6. Load Test

When conducting a load test, check the starting function and starting time. First, test at 100% rated load for 45 minutes, then at 110% standby load for 10 minutes.
Next, check the alternator charging by measuring the charging parameters and the ATS transfer function using grid and generator transfer signals.
Finally, test the safety protection functions such as emergency stop, oil pressure protection, and temperature protection.
