How to Properly Store a Generator During Periods of Inactivity

In practice, a generator is not always in continuous use. Businesses may use it only as a backup power source during outages or may cease operations due to changes in scale or location. However, long-term inactivity without proper storage procedures can lead to rust, corrosion, and degradation of the generator, severely impacting its performance and durability when it is put back into service.

In this article, Huu Toan will provide a detailed guide on the correct technical procedures for storing a generator and the essential steps to prepare it for operation after a long period of inactivity.

1. How to Store a Generator During Infrequent Use

For generators that are used infrequently (not inactive for more than 6 months), it is recommended to start the machine periodically every 2 weeks and run it at 50-70% load for 30 minutes. This practice helps prevent rust and ensures the equipment remains in optimal, ready-to-run condition.

When a generator is to be shut down for more than 6 months or placed in long-term storage, more meticulous preservation and maintenance procedures are required to minimize degradation and damage:

  • Change the lubricating oil and oil filter (it is best to drain the old oil while the engine is still warm).
  • Clean the air filter, the exterior of the engine, and the exhaust system. Apply suitable anti-rust preservatives (for unpainted metal surfaces, apply grease or an anti-corrosion agent).
  • For engines stored for over one year, completely drain the coolant, thoroughly clean the cooling system, and then refill it with new coolant (meeting the manufacturer's specified standards).
  • Drain all fuel from the system and replace it with a small amount of fuel system preservation additive.
  • Crank the engine with the starter motor without starting.
  • Remove the battery, clean it thoroughly, and store it in a cool, clean, dry, and well-ventilated area.
  • Seal all openings on the generator, such as the lubricating oil cap, air filter inlet, radiator cap, and exhaust outlets.
  • Store the engine in a dry place, avoiding direct sunlight and rain. If stored outdoors, ensure it is thoroughly covered and protected.

2. Steps to Prepare a Generator for Use After Long-Term Storage

Before bringing a generator back into operation after a long period of inactivity, businesses need to conduct a comprehensive inspection and follow the standard startup procedure:

  • Remove all protective coverings and clean the exterior of the unit.
  • Reinstall the battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  • Replace the lubricating oil, coolant, and fuel with new fluids as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Crank the engine shaft several times (for about 15 seconds per crank, with 2-minute intervals) to ensure the system is fully lubricated (do not start the engine).
  • Start the engine and let it run at no-load for approximately 15 minutes, carefully monitoring all operating parameters before applying a load.
  • During the first day of operation, conduct frequent checks to promptly detect any leaks, unusual noises, or voltage fluctuations to address issues immediately.
    Important Note:
Do not crank the engine for more than 10 seconds at a time, and allow at least 10 seconds between each attempt. If the engine fails to start after 3 attempts, stop immediately and proceed with inspection and repair, or contact the manufacturer for support.
